年初二 :: 金蛇狂舞春添彩, 玉树临风喜满门

There were three homes we visited today. All of which we wanted to be there, spend proper time to sit with the hosts to chat without glancing at the clock with that 'can't wait to leave' feeling. We saved the best for the last, so to speak. Reached the girlfriend's house at a late hour after the main bulk of her relatives and friends had left. We were mainly there to say hi to her parents whom we're very fond of. She wanted us to come at the off-peak hour when she could finally sit down to talk to us properly. Didn't mind it either way. We see her often enough to be comfortable on our own without needing to be fussed over or taken care of.

We had food pushed to our plates all day long. In a good way. Most were homemade delicious-ness and not easy to refuse. Buah keluak all the way. WOOT. At the girlfriend's, there were still plenty of not exactly leftovers, including the quintessential Hakka dish of abacus seeds (客家算盘子). They had catered to a giant number of humans who ate less than estimated. I gulped. It was impossible to refuse hospitality. A second lunch it was. The man merrily piled on the prata and curries. I went for the chok. Classic Cantonese congee that was light on the stomach and oh-so-satisfying. Picked out the pork balls, kept the century eggs and fishcake. Dumped a truckload of shallots on it and ate it along with tangy achar.

The man was also comfortable enough to be left alone with the girlfriend's father, engaged in some intense discussion that I wanted no part of. Merrily chatted with her mother. I did say I wasn't going to touch alcohol for two weeks. But it wasn't meant to be. The girlfriend egged me on in having a glass. Oh well. Joined her. She was busy rushing around all day playing host and helping out in the kitchen. It was a well-deserved glass of wine for her, and for her parents too. Kekekekek. Although it was ridiculous that we got sent off the house with red packets and no way to decline it. Hmmmmph.

In this photo, we hadn't drunk a sip yet.
