'Abendmusik' med Bach-brodrene

Came across the poster by the Singapore Chapter of the American Guild of Organists (Singapore AGO) which invited the public to a complimentary recital of the 'Music of the Bach Brothers'- Wilhelm Friedemann (1710 - 1784) and Carl Philipp Emanuel (1714 - 1788), part of the chapter's ongoing 'Abendmusik Chamber Concert Series'.

Held at the Norwegian Seamen's Mission (Sjømannskirken i Singapore), the space was surprisingly sufficient. The word 'Abendmusik' is German, not Norwegian, referring to 'evening music'. The venue is also a working church. Was pleased. Like an extension of my fantastisk norsk ferie.  :) There's a historical little pipe organ in the church, built in the 1960s by Danish builders Starup & Søn (which was originally founded by Norwegian Knud Olsen). The organ has been restored by Singapore's sole organ-builder Robert Navaratnam who is now 63 years old.

Wilhelm Friedemann Bach and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Sons of J.S Bach. Even if you had fallen asleep in those Music History & Criticism classes, you wouldn't have forgotten that their compositions marked the end of Baroque, bridging Classical in their musical style of Rococo. Not like I know anything about it. The pipe organ featured of course. 12 pieces were squeezed into the hour, and also saw the cello, flute, clarinet and vocals. Not familiar with the pieces either, and that was the joy of the evening.

Earlier, I was a bit mind-boggled that email-registration to indicate audience numbers wasn't even required. It could only mean- they really didn't care about numbers or for a long while, not many people attend these sort of recitals. In this cosy space that could accommodate 80 seats, there were about 50 people present, including the performers. While it was a complimentary recital, the organizers still thoughtfully put out simple refreshments and drinks for guests. Glad to see a little copper kettle at the doors to to collect token donations/fees for the recital. Happy to show my appreciation for the lovely hour of music.
