When we meet for lunch, J and I rarely could move away from Suju Masayuki at Mandarin Gallery. Of course if we're stuck in CBD, then we can't come over to Orchard Road. But when we have a leisurely two hours at mid-day, this is still one of our favorite lunch spots.
Again, it's hard for me to move away from their shogayaki teishoku. Many restaurants do shogayaki fine, but Suju does it exactly the way I like it — with enough strips of ginger at the side, savory without going OTT on the sweetness, and the pork is sliced thinly enough without too much fat.
J was able to move away from her usual grilled shio-salmon thingy and opted for a negitoro-don. Note to self, when I order this for her, I must request for them to remove the strips of ginger within. The kitchen have a peculiar habit of mixing in too much ginger strips under the heap of negitoro and tamago, among the rice and all. It's a bit hard to pick out. If you dislike ginger, then it's totally overpowering.
We had much to talk about. I haven't caught her for like two months. It was time to carry on the conversations from texts to IRL. It's a celebratory meal too, for us both, so we indulged in umeshu-soda for J, and a glass on ice for me.
