A Different View Of The World

Armed with mini survival packs and mosquito repellent, the bunch of us went to Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve for an afternoon walk. It's nothing wild. We're in Singapore after all. Lovely weather.

Some were there to watch the birds. I was there for the greenery and to escape the concrete jungle for a while. We all just wanted to perspire and feel...alive.

We had a guide who's a friend, and he cheerfully took us around and pointed out so many animals, insects and birds that would otherwise remain hidden from our city eyes. His specialty was biodiversity. He shared excellent stories of humans versus nature. Thanks S!

Saw two monitor lizards wrestle!

The walk coincided with the tide coming in. So there were plenty of crabs climbing up the tree trunks. And yes, they're edible. The Teochews are experts at cooking these sort of crabs. Hahahah. All our minds weren't too far from food. Weren't too bad in identifying some creatures of the swamp. We saw archers, mullets, skinks, mudskippers. Really wanted to see the mud lobsters. But no one spied any.

Singapore has its nature spots. But we'll have to leave the comfort of air-conditioned malls to find them. We should. This isn't a boring city. Not if one knows where to look for activities to sort out and simply bear with the heat, or just adapt to it. Not yell about it and hide away in another boring building window-shopping.

It was a very good afternoon out. It would have been a shorter walk but that we enjoyed it and lingered over many things, stopping to chat in hushed voices. It felt very good to be among nature's sounds. The walk made us very hungry. Craving specifically for seafood for an early dinner. Oops. *grin*
