Dressing Up

Together with my ultra slim Vietnamese co-emcee, it was fun to dress up in the Áo dài for the work dinner. Best of all, the colleague spent a good hour with me polishing my enunciation in the vernacular language and helping me translate phrases. I started to be aware of the subtle differences in the language between the North and South.

I think I have this Asean face. People have asked if I was Japanese, Korean or Thai. At the dinner, some actually thought I was Vietnamese. Till I opened my mouth to speak. My Vietnamese was at best, halting, in bits and pieces and very limited.

By and large, I'm not what one would term 'pudgy'. Still, I felt like a cow next to my super-slim colleague! Vietnamese women are unbelievably willowy. They might not be very tall. But their slender shapes lend an ethereal feel to their silhouette. Then, 90% of the population is trim and rather fit. It's not easy to find an overweight Vietnamese in Vietnam. The father had 10 sets of beautiful Áo dài made for me from HCMC. They are not frequently worn. It's slightly more cumbersome than the cheongsam unless I'm popping to dressier dinners or something. If the Áo dài is to be worn often, I better whip myself into shape! Oh, in this photo, I am the one in dark blue.

It's a very flattering piece. There is hardly any need to whip yourself in better shape, haha, not when you are so blessed 'there'.
