The Penang relatives visit regularly and always bring a princely gift all the way from their hometown.
Meticulously chosen for its taste and quality, the relatives always give generous portions so that we may freeze them and cook them over a couple of months. Ikan mergui from Penang. Yes. It's completely unhealthy. But I love it!
I love it best when it's deep fried to a crispy golden brown. Smells heavenly. With a satisfying crunch, that salty tangy taste awakens all senses. To singularly enjoy ikan mergui, I eat it with just plain white rice and maybe an egg done sunny-side-up. Nothing else is needed. Immensely satisfying.

corsage: yes! salted fish. not healthy at all. carcinogenic. but i like! so once in a blueblue moon.
i like it in fried rice though. manageable pieces. salty is nice. but i can't imagine eating just this and white rice!!!
add in the preserved beancurd. cantonese call it 'fu yu'. heart attack in a meal man.
cheryl: that too. but too many flavors. i get distracted. and the ones in fried rice are usually not that nice...only the salty taste is nice!
meteor: i like that too!!!! :)
