It's A Royal Purple

You know I've this obsession about my big toenails.

Over the past month, I think I battered my toe somewhat.

I think the toenail isn't happy. The fading bruise and fairly normal looking fungus were healing nicely with the regular dose of tea tree oil.

Then, I went all out for inline skating, bouncing around the studio en pointe, chlorinated water, sea water. I probably banged it around a little... you know, stubbed it against hard edges...

So now, the toenail is protesting. Very badly indeed.

First, it hurt. At the end of the week, it became so very itchy.

Then overnight, part of the nail lifted itself off the nail bed. It's now all bloody and oozing pus.

Eiowwwww. It doesn't even look like a normal fungal infection anymore!

I can't afford to let the infection spread to the other toenails!!!

Tried everything on it. Including the doctor's prescribed potassium permanganate followed by anti-fungal cream. The angry redness just wouldn't dry. All the chlorinated and salt water irritated it even more. I needed it to dry before I can douse it in anti-fungal cream. I had to bring out the trusty Gentian Violet to flood the toenail.

You know I'm rambling because I gotta warn you that there's this gross photo of my toenail coming up.

Gentian Violet is one antiseptic fluid that I totally believe in. Especially when I travel to rural areas and get nasty deep cuts that bleed or burns that blister into raw wounds. It's packed next to my bottle of its Chinese equivalent- 云南白药. (Click here for English version)

I can't go to the manicurist till at least 2 weeks later. I have to call her to get me a personal set of nail equipment. I shouldn't pass the fungus around to her other customers. Maybe I shouldn't even appear at the nail parlor and scare people. Should just ask her to come to the house.

This Gentian Violet better work.

I'm soooo afraid the fungus will kill the nail bed, somehow turn gangrenous and the whole toe will be chopped off.........

*whimper*

*wail*

Yes. I know. Pathetic isn't it?

I'm a big whiner.

Poor toe..!! i hope it gets better soon..!! can't afford to lose those pretty toes eh..??

Ouch! I know how it feels because my toe nails have err....came loose and dislodged before. Its often a result of hard running plus forgetting to trim my nails prior. Don't worry, they will grow back eventually.

can you not visit a podiatrist? get well soon impy.

Yikes! Looks real bad. Toes really have a mind of their own don't they? Whenever I wear court shoes, my big toe nail will be badly bruised, though nothing like that.

Hope your toe recovers quickly. (Maybe talking to it will help :p)

Oh dear.
But since I've switched on my "design" mode what first caught my attention was the colours. that royal purples goes very well with the golden colour.
Yes very royal indeed :)

OFF WITH THE TOE!!!

wahahaha. dry it. then douse it in the creams. otherwise, it'll just remain purple.

Erh...hope that means you get to wear birks or open toe stuff to work?

mamabok + yuling + kairinu: arrrrgh!!!! thanks. hope so.

coolinsider: i'm actually wishing that the nail will just drop off. makes it easier to medicate. :(

Q: doctor is it. podiatrist won't be able to help much here.

sesame: totally!!! hahahhaa. maybe i'll try coaxing it. ;P

cavalock: saw a doctor. think he's useless. need to see another one. you brave boy. 3 in-grown toenail ops. my god. that's like...nightmare personified!

b.muse: we'll see. but it won't stop me from skating! ha.

kikare: hahahahahah! that was the first thought through my mind when the toe turned purple!

lms: i already blatantly wear birkies to work. now i have a totally legitimate reason. muahahah. maybe i'll wrap it up in sterile gauze for a more dramatic effect. heeeee.

meteor: you evil thing.

Ooh, looks painful. Hope it gets better soon - stay away from all those activities that would aggravate the wound!!

Cavalock said...

nah, had it first in secondary school. the other 2 came later.

its only PAINFUL when the doc injects (2x) the big toe, numb it for the ops.

What a mess! It's gonna take a very long time before you have decent big toe nail. Is there throbbing pain? Get a doc to look at it please?

Ouch ouch!! Do you think that perhaps you should lay off pedicure for a while.. the chemical from the varnish and whatnots you know..

On a happier note, purple is my favouritest colour! HEH!! ;P

I hope Big Toe gets well soon.

IMP! Your poor poor toe!! No more nail polishes, inline skating, socks, or sea water! But hey, maybe chlorinated water may help? Supposed to kill germs right? :)

oh man, in spite of the warning, i still got a shock :P anyway, my toe-nail dropped out before but the new nail grew back really fast.

heh, you can invest in purple sandals to match ur toe or maybe a handbag :P

babe, i see red dots on the skin around the nail. left behind by the pus right? if so, this is no longer just fungal. it's bacteria. go insist on oral medication and antiobiotics. bacteria infections are bad.

and yes. in bad cases, it turns gangrenous.

jemej: :(

cavalock: aww! eiooow. *hands cover eyes*

sinlady: i did. think that one's useless. going to get it looked at properly tmrw.

jomeL: i think so too. just removed the varnish frm the big toe. ehhehehhe.

corsage: no leh...it weeped after i swam in chlorinated water. don't think i should swim in a pool again. spare other swimmers of the bacteria! sea water didn't seem to help much.

angelia: you're a gem lah, babe. you just put this grin on my face. ideas ideas!!! woots!

seth: oh dear. u too? some of the doctor friends said the same thing. they said i shouldn't have put the gentian violet coz it hides the real colors and they can't quite see what's exactly the situation. :( yes. going to get a second opinion tmrw.

one of my friends suffered from this before. even after seeing a specialist, it still took time for it to recover and the nail to grow out healthy. for her, it took almost 3 years for the bad nails to grow out! the best way is to keep your toe clean and dry until it recovers. take care.

do get a doc's opinion on it and if need be, remove the whole nail. as they say, short pain better than long pain.

dee: okie dokes. thanks!

coboypb: thanks! i will!

suziew: heeee. sorriiiie!!!!

fuchsiacow: very prepared to remove the nail! that would be better than having things festering underneath!

sherie: it's actually not painful. :) not sure if i can give up blading. but no swimming for sure. :)

Don't go for pedicures for the time being. It looks really bad. The nail seems ready to fall out anytime.
