We have a friend in town. He's a cartographer.
I find it incredibly romantic that he has taken 2 years off work to travel around the world. He has done charity work in Bolivia, Chile, Fiji, New Zealand, mango-picking in Darwin, behind-the-scenes in posh Brisbane eateries and now exploring the streets of Singapore. Then he's off to Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and China.
He is no longer just making representations of the earth on a flat surface. He's going right out there in the big wide world and bringing home impressions of his geographical traipising. In his mind's eye, his maps will reflect true geographical, and perhaps even cultural understanding.
We're quite thrilled that he's rather fascinated with our little island nation. This weekend, we're taking him to all the little nooks and crannies in town that Singaporeans chill out at.
At the same time, we're also inspired by his thirst for knowledge and quest for that richer experience in our sojourn on earth.
