I don't have a driving licence.
None of the friends allow me to take the wheel without a valid international driving licence. Don't think they ever will. So on road trips, I always end up as the navigator. The friends have this unshakeable faith in my dunno-learn-from-where topography skills.
I'm not totally comfortable being chauffeured around in strange zones. I have this need to consciously memorize the routes and put a mental map in my head. It'll be perfect if I can compare it with a physical map. I'm a very good map-reader. As long as I've a more or less accurate map in hand, I can get us to the designated area. Then, I rely on pure instincts to get us to the exact destination which is usually located on some desolate and quiet tiny roads.
I have gotten lost before (remember that trek from Pakse to Bolaven Plateau?), but rarely hopelessly lost and never for more than an hour. On foot, it's even harder for me to get lost. Bring me to somewhere once and even if it doesn't have a road name, I can find it again quite easily. Yes. Of course I do open my mouth to ask someone (if any) for directions when in serious doubt and with a timeline to adhere to. I am female.
I've discovered that the man loves driving. But he, ummm....doesn't fancy reading maps. He's very happy to turn whenever and wherever I tell him to. He doesn't protest beyond voicing concerns like, "How do you know this is the right turn when there're no road signs??!" To which, I always smile sagely as my reply.
He's like, the right brain; I'm the left brain.
So on road trips, we make a perfect team in one car.

hahahahah! are you going to tell me that you'd enjoy Amazing Race Asia?!
I am bad at driving and navigation so that makes me hell to travel with!
i can't do that! i leave the map reading to the hubs!
I'm just like your man! I can't stand reading maps and would often rely on gut instincts. Fortunately my other half is good at maps (and hopeless at driving!)
I once held a map upside-down. 'Nuff said.
i only identify the colors on the map. that the lines blur into one big line. that's why you read lor! wahahhaha.
AMAZING! *hang my head down in shame!*
I can't drive and neither can i read a map..! boohoohoo..! PB is left on his own.. during our road trips.. and he is very good at it. Maybe..this is the reason why..i just donch seems to worry.. when we are on the road. muahahha!!
Our mantra is - we'll take longer time (cos we'll miss the turn, we'll take a wrong turn or what not), but we'll get there!
we love road trips like you do too. my hubby and i are a perfect team too in a slightly different way. i'm hopelessly lost without a map, but never lost with one. my hubby on the other hand, is quite hopeless with a map, but good at finding places we want to go when there's no map / is not on the map, based on gut-feel/sun/moon/stars/trees and dunno whatnots! dee
seth: wahahahha. no.
carrie: oh, no way! you go with someone who can navigate and u enjoy the ride!
dre + eveline + mamabok: clever girls.
miss loi: i'm sure you can zoom straight, left and right. no problem. stay in hotels downtown!

Grin. I'm very much like you - excellent map reader. But so is the hb *but i'm abit better, ahem*. Plus we are both good drivers but hb is 'slightly' more skillful (give face abit here ah :P).
So yeah, imagine when both of us on the road, going to a specific destination. U wont wanna be in the car. Lol.
cherie: oh! i'll want to be in the car! i'll just quietly sit in the back and grin. maybe take a nap too. i'm sure i'll get to the destination super fast!
I'M GOOD AT BOTH, but he doesn't think so!
suziew: SHOW HIM!

orientalQ: heeeeee.
suziew: just the long weekend. thur - mon.
