Wandering around the Malaysian malls, I see many wheelchair-bound persons swinging down the aisles.
There are ramps in the mall for ease of movement.
I see groups of wheelchair-bound friends having a merry meal in the restaurants. I see them zipping into shops and browsing the selections with ease.
I see sales assistants going out of their way to open doors for the wheelchairs.
I find it disturbing that the wheelchair-bound going out to the shopping malls isn't a common occurence in Singapore.
Is saying 'space constraints' reason enough, really?

my friend peter tan nearly made a u-turn home because he could not get down to where we were.. I wonder how a clubhouse like that could fail to make that place wheelchair friendly? sigh! If you read his blog, you'd find out that it's also a long way to go here. But it's interesting to read what you just wrote.. in comparison to the singapore malls.
i find that shops in malls are generally NOT wheelchair friendly. shopping malls in general are NOT wheelchair friendly. too many humans.
it's like baby strollers. it's highly irritating to have to skip aside because the haughty mothers push/barge their way through.
if 100 people bring strollers through, go imagine.
i certainly don't take strollers to malls. i carry my son in my arms.
is it more of a social phenomenon rather?
perhaps they are more adventurous there?
i don't think it's like that in all the malls. maybe the big ones. and really, they have bigger space.
$$$$$. That's why.
I think people just didn't consider these things in the past. Now they do to a certain extent, but still not enough to make shopping comfortable for all. Anyway I think it is only the newer bigger malls in M'sia that are like that.
ohh..i never know that KL has really improved so much! that's pretty impressive! =p
larger spaces, easier to negotiate one's way.
jomel: i didn't see ramps leading down! perhaps the club was built in a time where disabled access isn't a major issue?
anon @ 10:57pm 2/7/08: can't disagree with you there. but i do get considerate moms a fair bit.
meteor: i was thinking, yea. we don't have malls this huge in sgp.
a malaysian + corsage: you're prob right. i only observed that for 5 days in the huge malls which are fairly new!
elaine: there are good things about KL. as a tourist, i do prefer/tend to pick up the good points.
opal: that too.
malaysia megamall are really huge. another reason probably becoz our bigger & popular shopping malls are always too crowded!
but i'm sure our wheelchair-bound folks aren't short of places to go during the weekends, if they wanted to.
findingmrlazy: very probably so. even i avoid our popular malls on the weekends!
