They Have None

Many have hooted with joy at the annoucements of the new policies. I don't. I feel anger, sadness and disappointment at these policies. I see the other side of the coin. I have seen resigned and stoic looks. I feel their heartache, I feel their pain. I can only struggle to understand what they have to go through.

I scrolled through the terms and conditions, hoping against hope.

And the single mothers get none.
They are the forgotten.
I had a war of words with a bigot the other day. Because in this specific discussion, I pointed out this unfair missing bit that the policies didn't address. Instead of giving me a good intellectual debate session, the bigot merrily said, "Too bad lor!" She said it in that flippant, high-handed way that riled me.

So I had this retort that more or less called her a bitch. Obviously the conversation degenerated. I certainly don't hide my disdain for those uppity bitches who secretly think that the single mothers don't deserve any benefits because they're ungodly and careless.

I throw this question to the floor. Will the policy-makers stand out and clearly campaign for anti-abortion laws in this country?

You do see a conundrum in there right? Is it any wonder why I'm not enamored with Singapore as a nation or a country? Is it any wonder that I don't feel affection towards the land where I am born and bred?

Don't talk to me about nationhood, citizenship, sense of belonging and pride. I feel none. These are pure gibberish unless I toe the line. I feel ashamed to be a citizen of a country that lawfully discriminates against single mothers and people with alternative lifestyles. Is it any wonder that I wholeheartedly embrace the concept of Singapore Inc.

a WOMAN actually said that?
Dang, but my "Mud" Pack will be too good for her!
Is it any wonder that Singapore is the M-Capital of the world?

kachunknorge: women are more critical of their own kind than the male species. unfortunately, there are many close-minded and unaccepting women out there.

hell ya. i didn't understand the logic. and the biggest slap in the face- the boys are career soliders. MINDEF should learn to exit graciously and gracefully. All they know is to adhere to the rules. These boys are career soliders and u want them to do NS?!!! Why don't they offer them a proper rank and turn the situation into something pleasant?! But no. They follow the rules.

In another 10 - 15 years, i'll have alot of friends facing the same situation. they know and they'll prepared to leave this country when that time comes.

cavalock: well, u win some, u lose some. for me, i don't see it as losing out or anything. coz the cost of having children is enormous. if i choose not have kids, then i suppose it's reasonable that i don't get these. quite fair lah. it's the 4mths maternity leave that i have a problem with. that, isn't fair to me. and i can't make it up by taking vacation leave for 4mths.

just curious. can u reject these bonuses? can u say no to them and not be obligated in any way?

You know what this is beginning to sound like?
Affirmative action for the reproductive woman. The encouragement of this crutch mentality is scary when women actually respond to it!
Can't quite get the vision of a jenny chasing this very very short term carrot out of my head... next image is probably a jack nudging the jenny along.

seth: good point. i'm not sure. will go browse. but i think, yes. but u'll still be obligated.

kachunknorge: it's social engineering at its most brilliant.

I'm not sure I'd go so far as to classify it as "brilliant", even in the most sarcastic sense of the word...
