Not Quite Aeroplane Ear

When the plane descends, I always have this pain that erupts in the middle of the space between my eyes.

It begins with a strange throbbing. Then it's as though the mucus within is sharply sucked back to the nape of the neck. This sucking motion induces the most extreme pain that doesn't even begin to compare to a stab wound.

It's like my head's become a vacuum.

People get ear pain. But I get this concentrated piercing pain up my nose, between my eyes and all the way down to the back of the neck. The ears don't hurt till 2 hours later. Then I get this 'migraine' thingy for 2 days after.

On this flight home, as the plane dipped, the pain was excruciating. I couldn't talk and couldn't think straight. All I could do was to keep every muscle in my body relaxed, regulate the breathing and control the intensity of pain that I was feeling.

If all the blood vessels in my head popped there and then, I wouldn't be too surprised. It already felt as though my head was going to explode.

Then the gums bled. I swore that the 15minutes before the landing were the most agonizing ever.

I stumbled out to the arrival hall, completely disoriented. But not so much till I couldn't buy a bottle of Bowmore 17 y.o on the way out.

And I'm home with a severe headache that's exerbated by demands I'm receiving on the work email.

Now the ears fucking hurt like no word I know to describe it.

hey, then how do u manage to scuba dive? maybe u shd buy those nose clearing squirts to clear ur passages before the plane lands. dunno if it'll work. can try?

btw, i really really miss diving...

Ahh... you have the same problems as me. It's the sinuses..

I used to have this problem and yes, I tot my head was exploding coz the pain was seriously excruciating.

The air bubble in the sinus expands when the plane drops down to lower altitude so thus causing the 'sudden' and extremely painful experience (even though the air is regulated pressure inside the cabin)

one way to clear it can be to use the nose clearing squirts as lovexiaolongbao suggested or I tried popping a Clarinase when the plane is at high altitude.

b.muse: soon! thanks!

lovexlb: not too many issues frm diving. but DCI for sure. i've eased off it the past 3 years. have to. i don't dive as frequently as i used to. 10yrs of diving have done things to my ears. think the eardrum's about to burst. heh. that's why i can't survive gigs without ear plugs. sound gives me the same pain with the vacuum action.

shutterbug: the nasal sprays don't work for me. :( i get them all the time! i'll try clarinase the next time. haven't tried that yet. hope it works!

that sounds really serious! Clarinase might help, just remember to take them before you fly. I think each pill lasts for 12 hours anyway. They really dry up my sinuses, although because I pop so often the last few years, the effectiveness seems to have wore off a bit.

that sounds really severe! And reading the comments about clarinase.. isn't that the medicine for cold? It is like a miracle drug in our household. hahaha..

you poor thing! i can't think of what medication can help so i guess clarinase is as good as any :(

I got that pressure buildup once too and it was pretty awful. Sweets help for my ear - not sure if it'd be of any help for you.

aiyoh. that's horrible. poor thing! not really sure if u can do anything about it though. my dad uses ear plugs ...but i was told it doesnt really work anyway!

jomel: apparently it clears the airways. will try. nasal sprays don't work. so try pills.

sinlady: must try lor.

dawn + orientalQ: i have the air pressure plugs. doesn't really help when i have it this bad. chewing gum or sweets has no effect either.
