It's funny how in multi-racial Singapore, surrounded by Indian friends, I never learnt how to wear the sari. Majority of the women in Sri Lanka wear the traditional sari everywhere. Even to work and high-powered meetings. Only a minority in the outskirts and children wear 'western' clothes and suits.
There're so many mind-boggling styles of draping that I'm not sure I can even get 2 basic ones. I can't even twist my hair into a stylish bun very well. I'm definitely not equipped to deal with the intricacies of wearing a sari. And wrestle with 6 metres of pure fabric to fold it into a decent shape. Think of my poor arm muscles. Can you imagine how one would wash the entire length of a sari?
I think saris are really beautiful. Very feminine, very elegant. The fabrics are jewel-hued, rich and very cheerful. For now, I'm quite content to admire them from afar.

I've only worn a sari twice -- once for a friend's wedding (I was one of the attendants)and the other time for a skit in school eons ago! Thanks to my Indian firends who helped with the draping and the spinning (yeah, they literally spun me!), I would have been at a total loss too! ;P

sari's have to be one of the world's loveliest national dresses. it doesn't even have to be rich sari's, you know? i love the soft flows.
saris are nice only if you are not spilling out of your midrift haha.
I received a sari as a gift 7 years ago, and erm... I have not worn it once. But you know I have the flab and the two-layered flesh at my waist to carry a sari well enough. :D
i love sari. i helped a friend once with her sari on her wedding day. it wasn't too complicated, but oh my, the silk, design and embellishments were the most beautiful things i've seen.

CDR: WAH! that would have been lovely! i'm sure you looked most exotic!
sinlady: lovely. even the plain cotton ones are beautifully draped.
ice: i think the idea for the sri lankan women is for some mid-riff to spill out! so one has some girth for the cloth to hold on to! lol. but i won't want MY lovehandles to spill!
jomel: OOH! heheheh. must wear lah. i'm sure you'll look good! i can imagine it already! woots.
D: wah! i must get your expert advice when i actually have to wear one!
there are "fake" saris which look exactly like the real thing, but are in fact stitched together. the bottom is a zippered skirt which the sari drapes hide marvellously!
alternatively, you could try a lengha!
delphine: if i need to don a sari, i'm going to 'cheat'. :) the lengha would be so easy to wear. heh.
