You know what irritates the hell out of me?
Parents who give their children a running commentary at the movie theatre when it's screening Red Cliff, not a cartoon.
And the parents encouraged the children to talk loudly for the whole 2.5hrs. The parents replied to their questions just as loudly. They talked over the sound of war scenes and explosions.
These children are not toddlers. They are at least 5 - 7 yrs old. Old enough to know that talking in cinemas is a social disgrace.
For all the 'culture' they impart to their kids, they forgot to impart the most important- social graces.
And I said so. The parents were indignant because they viewed it as their right for buying 5 movie tickets. They didn't think it was any booboo in talking throughout.
I hope your children don't grow up to be like you.
I hate Singaporeans sometimes.

Err why are these kids watching Red Cliff??
I once told off the parents (a furious father an an indifferent mother) in a conveyor belt Japanese eatery for not disciplining their screaming daughter. The father retorted with the very same line you quoted. I yelled back, "That's why I'm not having children!!!" You should have seen the father's face. The mother couldn't be bothered.
Poor kid.
Huh?? Tat is terribly irking!
I loathe the *ruckus* inside the cinema. My friend and I once sizzled "SSSSHHHHHH" really loud towards a father who brought his 2 yo toddler to a 'non cartoon' movie. His kid kept wailing and onli stop sulking if the father standing in the middle of the aisle! And we on the certain row wud be very pleased to see the dad's and the kid's stupid head on most of the show.
This is why I carry a green laser with me when I go watch movies.
it's true... sometimes i feel we have been going backwards. is it cos there are just too many "foreigners" that has come into singapore that's been influencing the people or just that somehow, people are just too busy earning a living to forget their social graces.
D
It isn't just Singaporeans, you know. We get the same thing over here...
I think society in general is simply getting more selfish, and sad to say, social graces are the first to go. That said, I don't bring my kids to the movies unless it's a children's movie, and even then, I'm very strict with the "no talking during the show" unless they want to give up the movie-going privilege. It's been withdrawn once before (we left in the middle of the movie), so they know I'm not joking.
don't you just hate having to tell these parents off? and they get all ugly about it instead of acting ashamed?
usually if the parents are not around, i would tackle the kid directly, eg. my favourite in a supermarket.
"boy, STOP running", boy would just stand there shocked, and that's bcos probably no one ever talk to him in that tone of voice before!
*shakes my head*
when i gotta complain/bitch abt similar stuff ..i'll end the line with " i hate singaporeans sometimes" too.
eveline: dunno lah. i'm fine with the kids watching. fine with kids talking. BUT not fine when parents don't even attempt to shush them! your story ah- the kid. poor thing really.
celicilia: HAIZZZ> rude people abound.
JM: i want a taser man.
D: that's another story altogether. UGH.
kachunknorge: true. hehe. i don't dare to scold people in other countries! can only scold my own kind. ha.
sinlady: i esp hate it when these pple retort to ask if i have kids of my own. what's social graces gotta do with having kids? if i have kids, i'll blardy smack them and leave the cinema IMMEDIATELY. wah lau.
kuro s.n: wah. that one- BEST. i must learn.
nuttyjas: many times, yes.
imp, you know this irritates the hell out of me too!
I like kuro.s.n.'s response. hehe.
this is totally irritating, especially in a cinema. oh my, what happens to all the parents nowadays? it is not their private screening room.
seriously, it's not the kids' fault. it's the parents!!
which is why i hardly hang out with most parents though i am one! cant stand them.. maybe, they cant stand me either! Hahaha..
ice: we must all learn from kuro!
elaine: dunno lah. ugh.
cherie: HAIZZ. i understand that being a parent is tough. but how difficult is it to teach one's child manners??? everyone's got different parenting styles. very difficult to hang out with those who don't share the same styles sometimes...
Many times when we see kids screaming their heads off, my partner would turn to me and say, "Doing this would earn a slap from my father."
But as long as the parent isolates the child and is shown to be taking some form of action, we try not to pay them any attention. Some parents do prefer to let the kid throw his tantrums while standing firm. I'd rather they do that than to indulge in the little brat's every demand!
It's those indifferent parents that I cannot stand!
eveline: what to do? we don't have the right to teach parents their parenting styles too. ugh. i always think damn hard before i approach a parent.
Tsk!! I wonder if those parents had the same upbringing, hence their self-righteousness.
Reminds me of those days when I had to terrorise kids twice a year. :p
There are some parents who would think nothing of ruining an experience for 100 other kids and their parents if their kid can have a good time.
Haha ... All the previous comments have given me an idea for a retort:
"You should have used a condom !"
geez. what's wrong with these people?! I feel your annoyance babe. I would have told them off too, even at the risk of a public quarrel! Hmpff!!
b.muse: can die. ARRGH.
lcn: dude! that's gotta be the most hilarious line EVER.
jomel: hahhaa. if it weren't 11.45pm and me feeling sleepy, i'd have picked a fight!
