It was completely random. In the middle of squeezing brain juices in one afternoon, I rolled away from my desk and asked my colleague to teach me how to weave a ketupat. She's got really deft fingers.It's friggin' not easy at all. I did the first one right, then screwed up the next 2 attempts. Grrrrr. I didn't manage to get the concept right. I got half of it only.
So of course I had to check it out on youtube. Waaah. Best. Got plenty of instructions. Following those instructions, I managed to make 2 more. But I couldn't quite get it without the videos, especially when tucking the sides in.
Now I need to learn how to weave it on my own, without people helping or looking at the videos.

hahaha... babe I have to tell you this because it's really making me laugh and curse at the same time.
My meimei brought home a pack of shiny coloured papers, long thin strips, a belated birthday present from one of her classmates.
These are the papers that's used to fold origami stars. I tried to figure out how to do it by looking at the illustration on the pack and just couldn't get it.
Then I remembered you and this post. So I searched Youtube and found MANY videos teaching one how to fold an origami star. I managed to do it, cursing and swearing, cos' you know I really hate this kind of thing.
Just hours ago, I was commenting here on this. I never expected myself to be doing this NOW???!! and there's many many strips of papers to be completed! Arrrghh!
I love learning stuff by watching YouTube videos! Cool :) I learnt how to sew zips that way. hehe.
Will it be different if you did the real ketupat with rice in it? Like needing an opening to put the rice in?

jomel: EHHH! STOP COMPLAINING LAH! Stars easier to make rather than ketupat! i remember making those stars! awesome. love the last part where you puff them up to look fat and cute.
corsage: clever question. i didn't even know it was to be filled with rice grains till she mentioned. i was like, 'what rice?!!' coz i was so focused on it as a decorative item till i forgot that in essence, it's to wrap and steam rice! and no, it wouldn't be a different way of wrapping. same for the real leaves. this decorative one has an opening to put 'rice grains' in before tightening it.
