Good Old Board Games!

The man burrowed to the mall to buy Christmas presents for his office. He wanted to get toys. So off we went to get toy helicopters that fly via remote control. There is an obvious linkage between toys and boys although I've no idea exactly what it details.

I didn't want to bother with Christmas presents. While stuck in the toy section, I saw these really cute games from stirlingfox. I caved in. I love board games. Board games have brought me hours of endless entertainment. In this digital and electronic age, I feel keenly, the sense of loss for all these basic games. We have plenty of facebook games, lots of choices on the DS Lite, Playstation, Wii, etc. Every fad is an electronic/video game. I want to go back to basics. I want us to remember the basic premise of celebrating Christmas. So this year, board games would be the theme for gifts.

Those on the shelves were sold as magnetic travel sets which are of the perfect size and functionality. I bought out the shelves and made the sales staff retrieve more from the store. I especially love the backgammon, crossword, checkers and hangman. So no surprises there people. You get board games this year! Do you still remember how to play them?

Forget Monopoly and our all-time favorite of the humble everygreen Scrabble. I've been inspired to buy some more as gifts. I went to get Citadel, Epic BattleLore, Settlers of Catan (Cities and Knights), The Seafarers of Catan, Frontiers, Sylla, Opus Dei and rather ironically- Pandemic. For the children, it's still The Secret Door, Pickomino and By Golly!. The irony- I ordered these fancier strategy games through an online store. By the way, I refuse to get the children Hannah Montana or Harry Potter board games. I can't believe that there are board games under the 'celebrity' licence!

It takes a certain moxie to sit through sessions of board games. If you don't have the chutzpah or interest, then I guess board games are going to be really boring. Monopoly doesn't excite me because I always lose. But I'll go to war with you in BattleLore if you anyhow move your units. I'm usually more awake at house parties with board games available than plain eating, drinking and schmoozing.

We live so much of our lines online. We could use some real time face-to-face interaction and get some laughter and insight this festive season. :)

You gotta play Monopoly with me and my friends. We play tournament rules which make the game alot more fun and fast!

Battlelore's good stuff, and the only reason why I'm holding back from buying it is because it's only 2 player. I'll know who to call for games now if/when I do get though! Haha

Pandemic's good stuff - strong mechanics that work well with the theme. Also good game to introduce to boardgame newbies because of all the interest on diseases these days.

I've just recently bought Acquire. It's a game where you grow your own hotel empire but invest in the smaller ones so you make money when your hotel chain acquire theirs. Very fun!

haha, we bought cluedo for our office party last year. that with a tub of caramel popcorn as some of the guys drank. didn't want them to go 100% without a butter based stomach. like that helps! lol.

JM: play Epic Battlelore- 4 players. they recommend 6, but we've tried and 4 is optimal. I definitely won't play Acquire lor. I can't do the business games. war games are best for me!

JM + dawn: i dunwan to play Monopoly with you guys. i've got no head for acquisition and will finish up all my money before time with no properties to show for it.

tuti: WAH. drinking Cluedo. SCARY!

hee, my personal fav is the humble and simple othello/reversi! =)

and i'm hopeless at Monopoly too! My fav part of the game is choosing the piece that rep me, then rolling the die and moving the pieces on the board. Haha. :p
