Never Retire

Stepping out of the flat one morning last week, I was immediately jolted from the half-awake state at the sight of a bent old man mopping the floor slowly. He was the new cleaner for the block. Before anything, he had already greeted us in English. Instantly, the man and I replied, "Good morning!"

My heart did this little twist. The cleaner was clearly, at least 75 years old. He was slow, but mobile. His back was bent and he couldn't raise his arms above his shoulders. He wasn't not able to clean the top of the lift or wipe the walls. But he was able to sweep and mop. He went about those tasks with great seriousness. He was doing his job.

From then on, the man and I endeavor to greet him first, before he can say anything. That's the least we can do. I'm not sure if that's all I want to do. We'll see. I thought I wouldn't be affected, but I am.

Is this the scenario that we want to see? That all the old folks in the country can't rest even after they've worked their asses off for a good 40 years? Is this what a certain personage mean about never retiring? It will take this cleaner a good 5 hours to finish all the lift lobbies in this assigned block and end his day with aching bones and feet. I'm quite sure that 'getting used to it' is NOT a way of life. If you make me do this for 5 hours, I'll die. Don't even get me started on what I see on a weekly basis that's happening to my old folks.

Never retire? That concept can go to hell.

it's easy for that certain persona to say that as he will never understand what normal old folks go through. he does not have to worry about medical bills, where to find the next meal, etc. and besides, tons of people are at his beck and call at all hours of his waking and sleeping hours.

normal folks can only take out their cpf funds after leaving the minimum sum in. to most, it translates to taking out maybe 5k or nothing.
and after that, you've got to work 5 yrs before a couple of hundreds are allowed to be given out monthly, till the fund depletes or till one dies maybe, depending on the insurance scheme one chooses.

how not to push trolley carts of cardboards around town? or work as a sweeper? see the eyes of these folks. they are lack of nutrition half the time.
i am seriously going to be one of these folks if my business goes wrong. help me god. i know this is how i may end. and i can't afford to migrate, nor have the papers to. demn it.
demn my lack of education due to some smart persona who saw it fit that i die because i am bad in chinese.
sorry. this touches a very raw nerve.

celcilia: unfortunately, you'll see that everywhere in singapore.

sinlady + jomel: indeed, he is full of crap.

tuti: i am sure. i'm just so dejected about the whole thing that i don't even want to talk about it very much anymore. i see this day in day out every week. i've so many fights with them that i've given up and done my own things just so the processes could be sped up.

That certain personage should just retire and spare us all. Easy for a person who earns 3 mil a year just for saying anything he likes
