The Local Alcohol


Besides all the wonderful Malbecs we've had, there has been plenty of sparkling from Bodegas Chandon in Mendoza. My tastebuds are still fresh from Domaine Chandon in Yarra Valley, and I can taste the distinct differences in the different years of sparkling here in Argentina! Tis fun.

When the guys brought out a bottle of Fernet Branca at the end of the meal, I retreated. Next to the elegant Malbec, this Fernet Branca is Argentina's roughshod national drink/cocktail. It's a dark sticky syrup-y alcohol with ABV about 40% that's meant to be drunk with copious amounts of Coca Cola. It smells sharp and medicinal. That usually spells trouble and guaranteed to give anyone a hangover with a capital H. One word- YUCKS.

Quilmes beer, lager sort, is much more palatable. It's Argentina's national beer. It goes fairly well with all sorts of pasta, good for days when I need a drink and there isn't good whisky on the menu. I've had that on separate days separately at lunch, tea and dinner. It's almost like sparkling water, with a bit of bite and flavor. Muahahahhaha.

I love the sparkling wine from Domaine Chandon too! Hey, that Malbec alkie sounds like Jaegermiester - strong alcohol disguised as cough syrup!

lady j: huh? no leh. the malbec is a beautiful wine akin to the Syrah and Merlot. It's the Fernet Branca that's a queer mix of Jaegermiester, Pernod and all things yucky.

oh dearie me.. I must have read wrongly! I think I'm slowly losing my mind.. keep interpreting things wrongly... oops!
