The few exceptions I made for shopping in Beijing, are for Dong Liang (栋梁) and B.N.C. (Brand New China, 薄荷糯米葱) and Nisiss. Carrying well-sewn clothes by up and coming Chinese designers in quality fabrics of fabulous cuts, minimalist or otherwise, these 2 stores are a pleasure to browse in. Lots of silk used, one of my favorite fabrics.
Located in trendy Sanlitun North Village (三里屯北区), B.N.C is spacious and happy. It carries some brands identical to what Dong Liang does, like Ricostru and Uma Wang. But B.N.C also has Jamy Wee, Yiwen Studio, etc. It's got quite a fair bit of accessories, shoes and random little pouches and scarves. Nice! I was interested in several dresses by Yiwen Studio. But I chose not to buy from B.N.C, and instead walked 6 minutes across to the designer's boutique at Nali Patio. As expected, a wider selection, and an even friendlier retail space awaited. They accept international credit cards, of course. :)

If you're at B.N.C., stroll across to Nisiss. It carries pieces from Guangzhou designers. Beautiful avant garde pieces. Almost eclectic. Not exactly attempts to rip-off any international designers, but it carries the signature trends of the season. I didn't buy anything, simply because I don't think I can carry anything off its current collections. A refreshing browse still.
I first chanced upon into Dong Liang in Shanghai, and walked away with a dress from Sara Yun and a top from Ricostru. Then, I had no idea what the heck the shop is about till I saw its wares. Then, the googling started after the purchases. Heh. This visit to its Beijing boutique, I left with a wool cape by JL and a black top from Uma Wang. :)
I do confess that alterations are required for my purchases. The designs seem to be made for women who're taller, perhaps with model-like proportions. So some fierce nip and tuck, shortening of the hemlines are needed. The good thing is, the shops will do it for you, and do it well. If you don't have the luxury of time, take them home and only hand it over to a trusted tailor to do it, so that the fall and fold of the fabric aren't spoilt, and the point of the design, lost.

Is that the wool cape you bought? Love the colour!
LadyJ: yes! I'm very fond of beige and creams in winter!
