Taking Off In The Fog

A full week of sunshine in Beijing. On our last night, I spied the angry red skies and drop in temperatures that indicated fog for the next day or two. Uh-oh. Throw in the permanent haze of polluted air in the city, we knew that wouldn't be fun. We were told it promptly snowed the next night, wreaking havoc across the city as cars and buses came to a standstill, and more flights were cancelled.

I understand some friends were delayed for hours before finally leaving the city. About 200 flights were cancelled for the day, including 80 international services. I've been told that the last time (quite recent!) two friends flew from Beijing to Singapore on different airlines. There was heavy rain. When the girl on SQ landed on schedule in the little red dot, the other on the non-SQ airline still hadn't taken off in Beijing. o_O

Glad that we got out before the fog grew thick and unrelenting. On our way to the airport, the driver asked if we had checked the flights, just to be sure. We had full trust in SQ. With the bravado of the ignorant, we said, "Yes. Singapore Airlines will be taking off." (We didn't check the flight status online that day, neither did we receive any emails or text messages from SQ after final confirmation of online check-in.) There was a bit of a delay at the airport, but not a big deal, and we were homebound.
