Eating Together Again

The friends whooshed into town and demanded to be taken out to eat spicy local food. They figured that if they're going to be holed up in a series of rather interesting discussions and lectures and masterclasses next week, they must try the 'real' food instead of whatever that's going to be catered for meals and wherever the official itinerary takes them to.

I had to get them 'There's No Carrot in Carrot Cake'. Well, they aren't first-time visitors to Singapore. So theoretically, of the 101 hawker dishes listed, they should have already tried half. Although we all wondered why ang ku kueh is like...the first item of the book. Technically, it isn't a hawker dish. Like another bunch of friends, they don't quite like this sticky odd tasting ang ku kueh. Neither do I.

There's only one sort of spicy food I can offer the friends. Nasi padang! After I texted them about lunch plans, the reply came back, "Done. We're just going to have juices, a banana and a kiwi for breakfast." Heh. They did. They actually did! In the mid-day heat that wasn't too unforgiving, we trooped down early to Sinar Pagi Nasi Padang and walloped a mountain of dishes that were just soooo good. We asked for so much sambal-everything till it was a tad embarrassing. We offered to pay, but the stall-owners graciously gave us whole bowls of lovely tongue-tingling gravy. :P Ate so much rice. We're probably going to skip dinner proper, and shall huddle into someone's hotel room for chocolate, fruit and yoghurt after the evening shows.
