Didn't realize I would love one of the shows at the Festival. There're many big names of which I'm nonchalant about. What is jaw-dropping-stylish to me won't be fashionable to another. What's lovely on another will be something I'll never be caught dead in. There's fashion, and there's fashion. It's all subjective, isn't it? Came as a surprise that I would enjoy this one show, and be mesmerized by it. Shows are pretty short. Enough to hold one's attention for a bit, or rather, enough to justify the length of time spent dressing up to attend a show.
So, this one show. There's plenty to like about it. Showmanship, wow factor, everything. It's unfussy, clean, and still minimalistic. Leather, patent, wool, cotton, silk, chiffon. FW2012 holds major monotones in black, blue and grey streaked with white. A heavy dose of rock and roll attitude. There's the motif of a gnarled, macerated withered tree. Methinks they're Witch Trees (manidoo-giizhikens). Oddly, I don't really think it's got a whole lot of that gothic feel. It comes across as mysterious, with a mischievous or possibly malignant sense of intrigue.
OH, THAT WITCHY WITCH HAT. Dramatic! Love it! I swooned. The genius that is Ennio Capasa. (See professional slideshow of the collection here.)
Granted, I skipped several shows, either the timings clashed, or I simply wasn't interested. Then there was work to be done, of course. There were so many things going on that it's not quite possible to be everywhere all at once, even if you chose to exhaust your hours in a day milling about at the Tent or at Suntec. But social media is all powerful. Videos, photos and real-time commentary filled me in. All in all, I give you my vote for the fashion festival- CoSTUME National.
