Nope, these aren't the right shoes for skateboarding. I was simply testing out the friend's (in her words) cheapo board that worked just fine. I haven't totally figured it out yet. Vibrams are perfectly suited for the snakeboard/waveboard. But it seems as though running shoes, Converse and Vans are better on skateboards because the thicker soles have got plenty of purposes beyond aiding balance.
The man and I had these heated discussions over shoes and boards, and the other day, he went right out to buy a brand new sleek skateboard, and a new pair of skating shoes that looked just like the many pairs of Vans in the cupboard. HAHAHAHA. He went off to East Coast Park alone one night (I went out drinking), and ran up and down the empty lanes to get back some of that wind-in-the-hair feel of his childhood. He got back the hang of it really quickly.
We've been watching skating videos and sighing (because we can't exactly do those now unless we get into it seriously) in amazement at the tricks the kids could do these days. Not just the whatever-kickflips-heelflips they call it now. Way cooler than the cool 900. My heels aren't completely glued to the skateboard like most skaters. I'm lousy at it. I very much prefer the waveboard/snakeboard that is closer to inline skates in a way. Heck, just gimme the inline skates any day.

He decided that 'downhill' mountain biking is better...?
