Victor's Kitchen

The out-of-town friends wanted dim sum. They weren't going to get very good ones back home. We didn't want any sort in a hotel, and would rather something local, noisy and buzzing. The other friends who've gone off for a vacation in Hong Kong are having the real deal. So we had to find something equivalent that isn't in a sanitary hotel. On a friend's recommendation, we went to Victor's Kitchen for lunch. None of us have been there or even heard of it. Yah lah, we very lousy.

Off we went at noon. To our surprise, while the restaurant was jam packed, we didn't have to wait long. Tables were leaving and we were shown to two tiny tables within 15 minutes. We've been warned about the service, and how we could be yelled at by grouchy owners and cashiers. It was okay that day. Almost good. Heh. Food arrived pretty fast. We probably ordered most items on the menu. Or rather I did. The friends read and speak no Chinese, so I had be the translator-interpreter. Gave it a whirl, and decided to order the salted egg yolk custard buns (奶黄流沙包) over the standard char siew pau (叉烧包). Plenty of carbs in this meal, so we needed to prioritize. The table is familiar with char siew pau, but most haven't tried the salted egg yolk custard buns. I'm no fan of either, but the table went crazy over those dessert-yet-not-quite buns. The filling flowed out beautifully to gasps from the table.

The side plates for our food were the smallest imaginable. The table was absolutely tickled and grappled rather deftly with the chopsticks and way-smaller-than-usual plates. The steamed carrot cake with scallops and sausages came highly recommended, but it was only appreciated by half the table. The other half preferred the usual pan-fried version. Loved those spinach and prawn dumplings. The man loves the steamed milk egg white custard (敦奶) thingy, and enjoyed this version with almond. Food is great! Not the cheong fun though. Cheong fun failed, in all versions on the menu.

I ate some prawns, but not many. Still, they kinda killed me. The lips swelled. Haizzzz. Been battling allergic reactions to shellfish for two weeks already, and I still haven't learnt to cut that out of the daily diet. Need to completely avoid shellfish and all crustaceans. Lobsters included. Scallops too. Can't pinpoint a single source of allergen. Body doesn't seem to be keeping well in the face of known and new allergies oddly resurfacing/surfacing.

jooo: very annoying lor. gotta pare down diet and slowly re-introduce everything again.

iceaster: no worries. i'm not a fan of dim sum. there're about two items that i eat, and not really love. if i can avoid having it even in Hong Kong, i will. it's more for the friends who like it, and want to eat it.

misti: we must have been pretty lucky. service was surprisingly good that day.

I hate to put a damper on Victor's, but they used to serve up really excellent HK style dim sum, but not anymore. There is just something the matter with their dim-sum fillings and skins/wrappers.

sinlady: luckily for us, we have no point of comparison. Whatever we had that day sorta worked. But you're right- the skin for the prawn dumplings were too thick, and the cheong fun failed big time,
