Last of the Thirties


The friends weren't going to let the man's 39th birthday pass without a beep. They rounded up impromptu drinks, plied him with three drams of lovely single malts (how disciplined), trotted out a cake and wished him well. 

The man said, "I am older than I once was, and younger than I'll be." 

Narrowed my eyes at him. I know that line. It's from the missing verse of Paul Simon's 'The Boxer'. Yes, my dear, "After changes upon changes, we are more or less the same."
