Since Bangkok is determined to rain daily, we also hung out loads at the bars. Like I said, I avoid trendy watering holes, EDM bars and hip cocktail joints. We gravitate towards craft beer bars, especially those that serve local brews. Had stopped by Hair of the Dog two nights ago for one drink. Didn't stay long. It doesn't serve local brews, so that was a little disappointing. Changwon Express at Flow House is a little too big and too noisy for me.
Local craft beer is popular, and gaining legitimate acceptance. (Stories about microbreweries being illegal in Thailand here, here, here and here.) Craft beer collective Mitr Sam Phan Brewery sited in Nonthaburi is one step closer to opening- they've been granted a brewpub license. It's getting quite exciting for the Bangkok craft beer scene; it has come a long way since 2015.
On another rainy night, we went out to a wonderful homecooked dinner at the friends' gorgeous dining space, then they took us to Let The Girl Kill for a nightcap. Loved it. A bar in an Asian-style shophouse with all its grungy vibes doesn't feel like it's trying too hard. The decor works. It's all about local brews here on their eight taps. Mickleheim, Serious Panda, The Circus, War Hops, Goose Beer and Beer Kaab, and whatever else they choose to showcase. There're only bar bites here (sausages and fried shrimp wontons), and nothing edible around the area except one noodles stall across the road, so if you're the hangry type, eat a proper dinner before coming.
Local craft beers seem to offer loads of IPA, but little dark lager or stout. Dunno why. I don't fancy florals and the hops. I'm a stout and porter girl. Or pale ale. At Let The Girl Kill, I stuck to things like red ale or riceberry lager. Those work better on my tastebuds and contribute to overall happiness.
