The dog's recent bout of shitsplosion affected me quite a bit. When her explosive diarrhea is caused by food fed, it's a failure on my part. I didn't carry out due care in portioning and balancing her food. I felt really bad. I spent a few hours days running scenarios in my head and methodically eliminating the cause(s) and such.
I had my suspicions as to what might have caused the runs, but as all pawrents know, it's hard to pinpoint when we also deal with environmental possibilities and pesticides. However, this isn't a dog who eats garbage or random things on the ground. She gets and adheres by the 'drop it' command. Her nibbling of grass shouldn't affect much either. Importantly, the poop tells me it isn't her guts being poisoned.
I played food detective to try to identify the culprit. This week, the dog was fed same food items prior and during her shitsplosion. Except that I brought out the bone broth and magic pumpkin puree to soothe her gut. Didn't shy away from alternating goat's milk or yoghurt either. Her poop this week was excellent. It boiled down to either a spoilt batch of air-dried lamb bites or the too-rich freshly cooked Norwegian trout that I didn't properly portion into a few meals. I'm fairly sure that that was the culprit. Haizzzz. She hasn’t had freshly cooked salmon or trout for a few weeks. She’s been having salmon freeze-dried and in small portions. The fresh trout skin was too fatty. Allowing her to finish it in two meals was a bit much. I had also forgotten to add yoghurt or pumpkin to it. It was overly rich and oily for her stomach, and it decided to purge.
I was rather annoyed when ignorant people suggested that she had the runs because she ate raw food. I don't like it when people shoot their mouths off without thought. Her raw food has been carefully procured, and checked. The one thing that isn't giving her the runs, would be all the raw food items she takes. ROARRRRR. I thought I'm vigilant about her food because of her sensitive digestive system. I guess I need to be more careful about it, in terms of portions. I'm so careful about balancing her nutrients and yet I still failed her. It broke my heart to see her grunting and her stomach making those weird sounds as she purged out a truckload of brown liquid. No overfeeding on any one item and I must remember that each time I think a portion is too much, it probably is.
