An Easy Bottle of Sake at Shunjuu Izakaya

It has been a year since I stepped into Shunjuu Izakaya at Robertson Quay. It isn't difficult to reserve a table when it's now on Chope. I'll just have to find time and a reason to come. (I keep ending up at the more dog-friendly restaurants in the area.) That night, the very good reason was to see V! Oof! I hadn't seen her in the nights for a bit, so it was lovely to sit down to an unhurried dinner.

The restaurant still served up the appetizers of raw cold cabbage and a lobster mayonnaise macaroni thingy. I tried their karasumi with pickled radish. Unfortunately the quality of the karasumi wasn’t great; they should buy a better iteration. Zzzzz. It was nice to see that the kitchen is still churning out nicely grilled sticks and 'drinking food'. Heh. But yes, avoid Friday and Saturday nights when the crowds whoosh in, the wait for food is long and the service can be patchy. Unless you turn up at 6pm and get your orders served before the main crowds flood the grill.

I rolled eyes a little when I spied the 300ml bottle of sake I wanted at S$59. Ah well, alcohol is pricey in Singapore restaurants. It's just how much they jack it up. It was a nicely chilled bottle, so okay lah, the extra S$25 (from bottleshops’ retail prices) went to the effort for the ice bucket and service. The servers helped us fill up our glasses a number of times. In the end, we ordered another 300ml bottle because I wouldn't mind a bit more, and V was also in the mood to have more sake. Hehehe. My girl!

Happily ate all the grilled chicken hearts. Had two servings of that! The only other meat we ordered was ton toro. Gingko nuts, shishito peppers, shiitake and quail eggs gave us the rest of the delicious protein that we needed. We had gyozas, and were wondering if we should get a zaru soba or an onigiri. Decided to skip major carbs and go for a final dish of grilled amberjack head. That came nicely charred. Yummy.
