On a night when the man and I had no dinner plans after running errands, our friends gave an unexpected and welcomed suggestion to pop by Sweet Garden Dining Cafe at Block 32, Cassia Crescent. We loved it that it was tucked away in a quiet part of the area among the residential blocks. It wasn’t crowded and we got the one outdoor table for two.
Owners Barry Lok and his wife Carmen have run it since 2016. I think it used to be a full dessert cafe, but it has since rebranded in 2019 and introduced savory mains. They still had rather decent dessert offerings and waffles too. The man wanted to not over order and get to dessert. Okaaaay. No appetizers or soup then. Heh.
Beers were a must on this hot hot night when nary a breeze stirred. We shared a black pepper and garlic pork chop and a seafood laksa squid ink spaghetti. The pork chop was not mind-blowing, but there was nothing to complain about. It wasn’t overly salty either. I appreciated the sauce at the side, and the mash and vegetables. I really liked the seafood laksa squid ink spaghetti. The gravy was tangy lovely, but of course not spicy since there wasn’t any additional sambal. The squid ink spaghetti was nicely cooked without being mushy in the generous gravy.
Made it to dessert. We had a choice of gelato with the apple crumble. I opted for yuzu since that should be the least sweet. Dessert came nicely presented. Too cute. The yuzu gelato had a texture closer to a sorbet. It was quite a good foil to the apple crumble, dragonfruit and grapes.
