When dining out for five vaccinated adults (who don't live together) was allowed, we quickly went out for a casual meal at Jiang Cantonese Tapas Restaurant. The friends had stopped by a few weeks back, and liked the food, so we all thought to go eat together.
The restaurant is kitschy. There're three or four tables on the ground floor, and then a door leads to the basement where there're more tables. The basement space is so Hong Kong! I think it's fine in the day at lunch, but at night, it might be too cosy for my liking. It really feels as though one of those HK gang meetings could be held there. Hurhurhur. I don't know what goes on down there, but many have said that it does seem like a nightclub on some nights, loud music included. Kekekekekek. I giggled at the neon lighting. Note to self, ask to sit upstairs then.
We ordered a fair bit of food. The wok-fried XO carrot cake was really good. I was there totally for the preserved meats claypot rice (腊味砂煲饭). There's another claypot rice of salted egg and minced meat patty (咸蛋肉饼砂煲饭). I'll get that another day. Tonight's claypot rice came with greens and a mix of lupcheong and yuncheong. It was pretty decent! I enjoyed it.
The menu holds cute one-dish meals that are great at lunch. I spied a luncheon meat rice with fried egg (餐蛋饭). Wooohoooo. The man eyed the HK style prawn wonton noodles and one of his favorite things. Weird to me, but he loves this curry beef brisket rice (咖喱牛腩饭). From what we tasted tonight, the beef brisket, char siew and roast pork should be of better quality than what food courts offer. The food is rather endearing, very Hong Kong. I've missed those flavors. When can I eat these in Hong Kong again? I even ordered dessert, a steaming hot bowl of black sesame rice dumplings in ginger tea (姜茶黑芝麻汤圆).
