Today is first day of the Lunar New Year of the Wood Snake. I started the day early with a long walk along East Coast Park. The floofs needed their walk. The weather was fantastic! It was cool and breezy. What a nice change from the usual heat and humidity during this period. It has been lovely, honestly. That's because I make an effort to draw strict boundaries and protect my mind space. My heart feels lighter, and there's nothing for me to be angsty over after 'obligatory' events since I didn't attend. Ha!
I have some duties to fulfil for the old folks on my roster. Those are fine. I'm happy doing them. I don't have a habit of receiving visitors at home for any reason, so it's certainly not a thing during this period either. I don't cook either, and have no interest in cooking, so it's not a thing to invite people to come taste my food. That tickles me so much.
I'm not interested in dispensing angpows to 'relatives' and 'extended relatives' just because it's customary. I eschew certain traditions because it's discriminatory and levies social pressure and norms that I don't agree with. If I don't bother visiting, then I'm not going to allocate or prepare angpows for your numerous children since I've either never seen them, don't remember them and definitely don't know them.
I'm not completely cantankerous. I do have little gifts of food and mandarin oranges prepped for friends that I do see regularly, and angpows prepped for the floofs and little tots that I know I would see over the two festive weekends.
