I like Keong Saik Road. It's one of the last places in Singapore where you could feel history and culture seeping through as you weave between shops. It's really a juxtaposition of old and new, east and west.
On a random afternoon, made time to wander along the little streets. It would be soon before all these sights disappear and the area gentrifies with hipster bars and restaurants moving in. Was absolutely fascinated by the clothes hung out to dry on bamboo poles. I wonder who wore these clothes.
There was a door on the ground floor of a shophouse. It held red lanterns. Perhaps it led to a Chinese brothel that could surreptitiously still be in existence. Wanted to poke my head in. I inched closer to the door.
The man spotted me and promptly dragged me away. He said that the occupants would consider me bad luck. He said I would be promptly chased out with a broom, yelling all the way down the street.
SO??? That would be exciting. Very TCS Channel 8. Spoilsport.

i don't think that broom's going to be very clean...so it's no fun running down the street and getting dirt splattered all over!

There's a nice Cantonese tze-char place called "Kok Seng" on that street, between Hotel 1927 (or is it 1929 ?) and that hip, vegetarian cafe. Fried chicken with prawn paste, fish head bee hoon ... yummmm
