There was a collective sigh as some of us furiously googled and traded snippets of information about the band. Then, there was some mad scrambling to listen to their albums. It was decided that we had a date to watch Nouvelle Vague (pronounced vaarg) at the Very Pampered party at Zouk on Saturday.
From the comments that drifted by, we idly wondered how many in the audience knew anything about Nouvelle Vague. The band's name meant 'new wave' in French and that meant everything to their music style. Sure. They do covers. We wondered how many even cared that this was somewhat of a treat to the Singapore music/gig scene. Yup. Being totally judgmental when we initially knew nothing about the band.
The 1-hour Singapore gig showcased their first album which covered mainly 80s rock numbers in their trademark new wave style. They re-arranged the numbers to an up-tempo bossa nova that seemed totally cheerful no matter how the lyrics went. Of course they had to do Depeche Mode for the encore.
In A Manner of Speaking was beautifully done with the double bass as the focal instrument. It was a superbly exquisite arrangement. The double bass abandoned its usual slap style and played hauntingly beautiful strains in the melody. As the last note faded away, we clapped so very hard. The gig was just lovely.
