At Newton Hawker Centre!

After the exciting gigs at The People's Party, we needed food. All of us had a heavy lunch and some random bites here and there, but haven't had a proper dinner. We were not too bothered, really. Too much fun going on to feel hungry. Supper could be done later.

After lurking around for a bit, we finally got to deciding where to go. Drinks were considered, but being a Sunday night, we had very few options for a party even though we could make one happen. We ended up at Newton Hawker Centre. Don't ask. We had many non-Singaporeans in our midst. So it seemed a must to head there. Even though there're many other choices of venues for supper, the friends would still want to take a look at Newton Hawker Centre because some stupid guidebooks pointed them here. Grrrrrr.

While we didn't like pushy hawkers, it was rather appreciative to have them back off when we said, "No, thank you." We could deal with ordering our food from whichever stall we preferred. It wasn't that crowded at this hour. We found 2 very long tables to accommodate us. The humidity was bearable with the large quantities of cold liquid ingested.

Needless to say, the table was filled with plates and plates of food. I was immensely amused to see our friends wallop cockles, sambal stingray, sambal kangkong, fried squid and everything fun in the zi char stall. Drenched in perspiration, they loved that sugar cane lemon drink thingy, as well as the soursop juices and avocado mixes. There were unabashed bottles of Tiger beer perched around too.

Half of the group. The other half was busy photo-bombing at the back, and heckling at the front.

You know, tonight I had a plate of chye tau kueh that came in a large portion offering both 'black and white'. That portion cost S$6 and it was satisfying at an acceptable quality. I don't know any chye tau kueh stall that sells a portion for anything less than S$2.50, much less S$1.50. I'm most certainly not going to Peach Garden to pay S$10 for a fancier sounding "XO sauce chye tow kueh" even if they offer excellent service, better crockery, and perhaps a cleaner environment.

Look, I'm NEVER paying S$25 for nasi lemak in Singapore. Not when 'Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak' offers me a better version. I'd rather queue in the heat and get shouted at by the aunty and uncle at the stall. (But they're usually pretty nice.) Then, I'd be most interested to find out which atas restaurants can do the humble chwee kueh in the familiar flavors I love. But hell, I'm not paying S$5 for a tiny piece of chwee kueh. Not even 2 pieces. No.friggin.way.

He Zhong at Bukit Timah food centre sells a huge satisfying portion of chai tow kueh for $2! Go for the white, it's crisp and delicious with lots of chai por. The black version from Kampong Carrot Cake at Tiong Bahru FC is decent too. It's the chunky kind, very old school type. Generous portion for $2.

Well, I'm talking about REAL chai tow kueh. You know that imp! I certainly can't find any chai tow kueh that costs only $1.50!

I haven't been to newton hawker centre in ages. Used to go there alot in the 70's when I was a little kid. Might check it out again one night for nostalgia reasons.

On another note, I really must try that nasi lemak you recommend :)

cavalock: we do hang out quite a bit at Orchard Cineleisure's basement food court. That Thai food stall's basil chicken rice set is da bomb. The mixed (economy) rice stall ain't too bad as well. No prizes for guessing what fed us over the weekend of The People's Party at Scape! Heh.
