Growing Up

For those who know, I've another not-so-little god-daughter who'll be all of 26 years old soon. I've watched her grow from a little girl in school uniform to a sassy young lady who struts both designer labels and flea market gems with ease, flounce and a ridiculous amount of confidence.

As she grows older, our common topics of conversation increased. I've come to appreciate her as an equal, and as a friend too. She's managed to build a very strong-willed mind of her own, and is very level-headed about what she wants to make out of her life, and with some non-rose-tinted idea of where she wants to be in 10 years.

I usually don't allow her to pay on any of our outings simply because I'm older, and she was still in school. There're some responsibilities as the 'godmother'! Only in the recent years that she's graduated, got a job and stepped into those adult shoes, she's permitted to pay for tiny items, and absolutely never to buy expensive presents for me.

Tonight, she insisted on getting the tab for drinks at Nektar. My eyes widened. In my usual fashion, I didn't even ask how much the individual cocktails cost because I know their prices. But she isn't familiar with this bar, so she doesn't know, and she offered to pay! There's the other matter of...have you seen how much I drink or rather the types of drinks I pick? I took out my credit card. She took my hand away and said firmly, "Drinks are on me. I'm earning too. You're unemployed." My jaw dropped. Snarky little thing!!! With a wink and a flourish, she placed her credit card on the bill presented.

Awwwwww. I'm so very proud of her. That's my girl, alright.

unemployed too or rather 'semi-retired' is how i like to call it. When folks look surprised and ask, ' at your age?', I usually say, 'even watched Thomas Crown Affair, the Italian Job or Ocean's Eleven? Think about it.' and then i wink and walk away.

sorry, i'm bored waiting for the reno guy to show up...;P

cavalock: heh. To many's credit, their reaction now is more of, "awesome! You should have done that long ago!" hurhurhur. I don't have your panache to say that leh. They won't believe a word i say!
