The end of the first round of food. |
Wanting a change from the usual Tanjong Pagar Korean joints, we decided to try out Damotory at Robertson Walk. Done up in traditional style with wooden furnishings, it means sitting cross-legged on the floor with no cheat spaces at the bottom of the table. I think there's a section with the normal tables and chairs. Our group of 10 took the whole private room. The music is insipid and inane. Our room had a tv flashing music videos that didn't match the music coming out of the speakers. ArRRRRRrrrgh. At least a few of us didn't understand the lyrics, not too bad. It was the music that was simply grating. For the rest, they tried their best to ignore the songs. Hahahaha.
Its food is all right, but not the best. It's not pathetic for sure. It's got an extensive menu and whatever comes out of the kitchen doesn't suck. I like their heavy ceramic and stone crockery, mugs and serving plates. Last order for food ends at midnight. This place is great if you focus on the drinking. At the moment, it charges fairly reasonable prices for alcohol in general. Importantly, it's got an extensive selection of Korean wines, beer and whatnots, apple spritzers, chrysanthemum-something, and also ginseng wine.
Bottles and bottles and bottles of beer, makgeolli and soju landed on our table. Not the world's best combination. Could have been worse though. This particular brand of Chamisul (fresh dew) soju is so easy to chug that nobody really thought to sip the shot. It was simply downed. I stopped counting how many bottles we had by the thirtieth.
It was hilarious how everyone took turns to holler 'Yogi-yo!' (여기오) in different tones just to sound more pleasant, or less commanding! Whenever one of the friends said it, it sounded so harsh! Like he was calling people over to scold them. Hahahaha. I thought it was 'cho-gi-yo', but the Korean friends stopped me and said nobody ever says that in a restaurant. It's like saying 'over there' instead of 'over here'. So 'yogi-yo' it is. The food kept arriving, and the bottles of alcohol never ceased. We ordered almost as many bottles of water. I was watching my alcohol intake with precision. I wasn't sure how my head and body would react to them. Couldn't afford an alcohol buzz, much less a hangover for the inline skating session the next day.
