It's not often that the man gets to have dessert after a meal because he wants to share and I never want to have any. Hahahah. In Seattle, we're having a couple of meals with friends and he has definitely earmarked desserts to share with them. He's gotten pretty lucky so far. Had a few bites of pies and all, as well as tiramisu and chocolates.
The moment the man read about the doughnuts at Lola, he insisted on eating them, regardless. He's definitely gone around all of Tom Douglas' restaurants in Seattle- a pizzerias, bakery, a Greek spot, a tavern and dunno what else. The food's been pretty decent at all. Quite a feat for a chef-restauranteur. *happy sigh Lola's serve tapas. Pretty decent. The squid and salmon were nicely tender. I had a stick of couldn't-go-wrong grilled halloumi and figs. Mmmm.
Lola's doughnuts came with vanilla mascarpone and an in-season blueberry jam. Apparently the jam changes with the seasons. The doughnuts were served with cinnamon sugar in a paper bag that was shaken at the table, and tumbled out onto the plate piping hot.
I tried one and went wow. Didn't have a second. Not bothered to order it again since I'm no big dessert fan. But I recognize the man's fascination with them. How on earth do those sad doughnuts (i.e Krispy Kreme) compare? Lola's were excellent. The cinnamon sugar wasn't that sweet. Good oil used to ensure a fragrance instead of that stale deep-fried smell. The doughnuts, without a hole in the centre, were bite-sized fluffy. The man called them "butter pillows". They're closer to beignets, really.

I don't like Krispy Kreme either. Too too sweet! And I like my doughnuts a bit more bready.
fern: then you'll definitely like beignets!
