Between Old 97's and Maxïmo Park that fell on the same evening at the same timing, we chose the latter. Seattle is the first stop of their US tour, then Portland and San Francisco, and others before ending in Boston; they head to Germany in June. The band has been working hard. On tour for a couple of months and it shows in their playing. Tight. Very entertaining live.
Over 1.5 hours, Maxïmo Park mainly played songs from the latest two albums 'National Health' and 'Too Much Information'. Paul Smith is ever the consummate frontman. It was such a small crowd and he still hammed it up for us. Honestly, I'm not this huge fan of Maxïmo Park. There're a couple of familiar songs which are pretty groovy and catchy with good songwriting and lyrics, and that's about it. Let's just say that for a country and era comparison, I like them way better over Franz Ferdinand.
It was a surprisingly cosy gig. There couldn't have been more than 200 people in the room. I put my estimate at 145. Wow. Expected a bigger turnout from Seattle. Perhaps everyone went to the other gig instead for their alternative-country vibes and in honor of the band's 20th anniversary. Anyway, the audience at this gig was happy. The man and I were thought that Maxïmo Park should just come to Asia again, and stop by Singapore. They would sell many more tickets at 6.5 times of what we paid for a ticket in Seattle, and still cover airfare.
