南洋式咖啡 :: 大眾茶室

Since we were gonna lurk at Kovan Hub for the 100 Bands Festival for three consecutive weekends, we found a laid-back decent beer place immediately in the form of Nectars and Vine. Priorities, you see. The weather is either relentlessly scorching and humid or dark and stormy. Grrrrr. Be prepared to perspire buckets or get thoroughly drenched at the stages. Alternatively, seek shelter at the bus interchange where you could still hear everything.

Anyway, between sets at some point, we needed to fill the stomachs, pee and quench thirst. Found pretty decent food within driving distance that isn't laden with lard or grease, or just pork and oily major-fail vegetarian stalls. Frankly, the economic rice stall serves up the easiest food that I don't mind. Also, the man discovered where we could adjourn for a decent cup of coffee.

He took me all the way to the hawker centre at Hougang Avenue 1 for a cup of Nanyang-style coffee. Okay, can. Kopi-o-siu-dai. I know how to order that. Muahahaha. I suppose people who live in the area know it, but we don't. So there's a bit of thrill in sipping a cup of Nanyang-style coffee that isn't thin, acidic, confused or sour like many chain stores. I don't share this food blogger's tastebuds or opinions, but I appreciate his information occasionally as a guide; his research on this cafe is useful. Unsurprisingly, they're on Instagram- @dazhongcafe.

This cup from Da Zhong Cafe (大眾茶室) actually held body and good aroma. Tad bitter and strong. Nothing wimpy about it. I love it. Obviously, thought and effort has been put into ensuring the quality of the roast of the beans and to what degree to grind them into an acceptable blend. One selling point touted is their consistent technique of brewing coffee in the traditional brass flasks and pulling it through a sock to filter.

S$0.70 for this cup.
