First Frost of the Season

The last gigantic snowfall in King County earlier this February was scary. Everything froze over. Lots of pipes probably burst. It doesn't snow often here though. Winter officially begins in 20 days. The leaves are still red on the trees. Current temperatures are warm enough, but it sure feels like winter has begun.

Slightly further out, Edmonds, Eastside and Puget Sound residents woke up to a dusting of frost or three inches of snow. Downtown Seattle and Bellevue saw nothing very much except a light dusting yesterday. Most melted away by the evening except for the ice formed on top of the cars, roofs and whatever left on the bushes. There's black ice on the pavement, so gotta watch out for that.

Weather reports are glanced at on a daily basis. But I've given up on obsessing about the exact temperatures. Never mind if it's cloudy or sunny. All that's necessary to know is whether it would rain. Not even bothered to carry an umbrella out. A hoodie works. For days requiring formal wear, most porches are covered anyway. Cannot wrap the brain around fahrenheit. Why can't US just stick to the metric system of measurements. Grrrrr. There isn't much of a difference between 2°C or -6°C. We aren't in the mountains. Not planning any protracted outdoor activities. Plenty of warm clothing and three pairs of boots to take me through rain and sleet. I'll probably raise eyebrows when it goes down to -10°C. For those sort of nights or rainy days, I'm going to be firm friends with the fireplace.
