YSTCM :: Verklärte Nacht

When the peeps asked if I wanted to go to Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music's (YSTCM) faculty recital of 'Verklärte Nacht', I randomly said yes without knowing if I would be in town or whatever. When late October rolled around, I consciously avoided fixing other appointments for the night. Figured that as along as I was in town, the concert would be firmly on the calendar.

The program covered Marjan Mozetich's 'Lament in the Trampled Garden', Anton Arensky's 'String Quartet No. 2 in A minor, Op. 35', and of course Arnold Schoenberg's 1899 'Verklärte Nacht, Op. 4'. The evening opened with T'ang Quartet who were in residence at YSTCM. Then Head of Cello Studies Qin Li-Wei joined them for the second piece of the night.

After the intermission, Head of Viola Studies Zhang Manchin joined them to complete the string sextet for Schoenberg's interpretation of German poet Richard Dehmelt's 1896 (to me) bizarre poetry collection 'Weib and Welt' ('Woman and World'). And of course the music was set to the poet's poem 'Verklärte Nacht' ('Transfigured Night') where a man magnanimously accepts his female partner's affair and resulting child that isn't his. Schoenberg's five distinct sections in the music correspond to the five stanzas of the poem.

Du treibst mit mir auf kaltem Meer,
doch eine eigne Wärme flimmert
von Dir in mich, von mir in Dich.
Die wird das fremde Kind verklären,
Du wirst es mir, von mir gebären;
Du hast den Glanz in mich gebracht,
Du hast mich selbst zum Kind gemacht.

I like YSTCM's free concerts. :p But must register online lah, to help the organizers manage attendance numbers. It was surprisingly crowded tonight. People were on time; the hall was full. The circle seats were opened up to accommodate more people. Two hours simply flew by. What a bonus to have the string sextet oblige with an encore of Tchaikovsky's Second Movement of 'Souvenir de Florence'. What an absolute pleasure.
