SIFA 2017 :: fait 'poc poc' de ce qui ne fait 'pas poc poc'

Produced by L'Amicale de production, the 75-minute 'Germinal' is ridiculously clever and delightful! We went with no expectations and came away amazed. So glad the friends (who had watched it elsewhere) urged us to attend the show at SIFA (Singapore International Festival of the Arts).

What a fantastic concept and presentation by Halory Goerger and Antoine Defoort. 'Germinal' is only their second show as a duo. (The first being '&&&&&& & &&&' in 2010.) Visual arts, physical theatre and a little bit of everything, the show delighted the facilitator in me who regularly draw mind-maps, and thrilled the geek portion with its vision of closed universes, creation, communication and cooperation, and the concept of 'let there be light'. It's all about the ever-expanding consciousness of self.

[No, nothing about this show is remotely inspired by or related to the thirteenth novel 'Germinal' in Émile Zola's classic French epic 'Les Rougon-Macquart' (20 novels about the Second French Empire).]

Performed mainly in French, the supertitles were projected in English. The actors used their own names on stage- Jean-Baptiste Delannoy, Beatriz Setién, Denis Robert, Halory Goerger, and also the voice of Mathilde Maillard. They were absolutely delightful in tracing a creation myth on stage with words, sounds, technology, diagrams, charts and music. We grinned when the guitar came out. It was a Squier; a J. Mascis Jazzmaster. We would know! 😎 I died when Windows XP's famous 'Bliss' (that default wallpaper of green hills and blue sky) became the backdrop. The crew made the stage technical movements seamless in its superb set construction, timing and overall production.

It was magnificently brilliant. Time passed too fast. This is a show to be savored and discussed about long after it ended. We did just that over drinks.
