Hajjah Ratna Nasi Padang

The other stall that we frequent for awesome Padang-style dishes is Hajjah Ratna Nasi Padang at Beach Road. It's near enough to town and super convenient to get to. If we don't feel like biryani and want spices still, nasi padang works great.

If you're driving, just park across at Golden Mile Complex. It'll save you a lot of angst in queuing. Crazy crowds flock to the food center next door, and those carpark lots at Block 3 and 4 are always full. If your dining companions don't want nasi padang, in the same kopitiam, there's also Vietnamese pho, duck rice and Chinese point-point rice. The kopi-o-siu-dai gao is fairly decent. I find it a great lunch spot during week days and Saturdays.

Apparently Hajjah Ratna has been around for two decades, from its days in Kampong Glam till the past decade at this Beach Road location. Mr Zainal mans the stall, and that's the face we always see. His brother does the cooking, producing all these wonderful foods.

It's tough to stay away from my favorite items each time I come here. These are dishes that require loads of effort in making the rempah, and prepping all the ingredients, spices and all. I can't quite cook at home to these standards. These items are full of empty calories, cholesterol and hold very little nutritional value. HAHAHAHHA. Begedil, paru, salted eggs, fish roe and such. Accompanied by generous splashes of tasty sambal belado. Superbly delicious. 💙
