The plan was to have a late dinner at 10.30pm at a Teochew porridge stall somewhere. A flurry of texts ensued and somehow, we were invited to crash the friends’ pad for supper! She had guests for dinner, but there was plenty of food left. Once I was sure that we wouldn't be invading their time, I was shamelessly enthusiastic. Siew yoke and steamed chicken rice! The food would be so much better than any supper joint’s!
There was the to-die-for bowl of chicken rice. And that was all I really really wanted. The chicken is great, but she has perfected that rice, with a little oil (chicken fat lor) and nothing too scary. With a dash of homemade chilli sauce, it was sublime. Didn't matter that it was close to midnight. I don't eat like this every night. These calories would simply be burned away the next day.
I most certainly didn’t refuse the generous offer of a little tub of chilli that was meant for the chicken. It was properly spicy and it could be easily eaten with other food items. Never refuse gifts of homemade chilli. Had soon kueh for lunch, and it tasted extra good with the piquant tangy chilli. Mmmm.
