Cleaning Liquid Poop Off the Carpet

The dog had an adrenalin rush (she ran out of the front door again into the corridor. Thank goodness she didn't sprint off into the garden. She listened to us and trotted back) and couldn’t contain her excitement. So minutes after she was secured back at home, she had a shitsplosion on the carpet in the study. Excitement pooping. Usually liquid. Fuck. She decided to take a guilty pee as well. 🤬

Pee is not difficult to sort out. Liquid poop is. Thank gawwd we caught it almost immediately. Fresh pee and poop are much easier to soak up than a set that has time to sit for more than fifteen minutes. Thankfully this is the hardy sort of carpet squares used in offices, not those high pile rugs. Luckily I had sprayed Scotchgard over it. Still, I wish she had pooped on the other carpets so that I could just roll them up and dump them. There, no cleaning necessary. Ugh. Cleaning liquid poop off the carpets is unbelievably painful. It's a three to four-day cleaning process.

  1. Immediately took gloves and used paper towels to soak up the liquid poop and pee.
  2. Sprayed soiled area with pet-friendly disinfectant and soak it up again, repeat X 3.
  3. Then I hauled out the three floor cloths and a bucket of water + Dettol. Scrubbed it thoroughly till the brown was out. (Don't throw out used thinned cloths just yet. Those are kept for incidents like these. Once used, those cloths gotta be thrown away.)
  4. Did a final spray of enzymatic deodorizer before the carpet was allowed to dry in the night.
  5. The next afternoon, I repeated Step 2 to 4.
  6. By night-time, the carpet was ready for baking soda.

The final step in this cleaning process would be to sprinkle baking soda on the offending areas to soak up the smells. Not the spray, but the actual powder. All pet owner always stock a box (or two) of baking soda. It's this amazing household product that really helps with EVERYTHING. Include white vinegar and apple cider vinegar on your pantry shelves too.

Vacuumed up the powder the next day. Oooh that stank. This isn't a job for the Dyson. Emptying it and cleaning its filter would be a nightmare. This is a job for a super practical standard Bosch bagless vacuum; its canister could be easily emptied into the bin, then washed. The baking soda really took away lots of pungent smells. Worked better than any disinfectant from a retail store. Two nights of layering the carpet with baking soda and vacuuming it thoroughly finally eradicated the lingering stench. Thank gawwd.
