Went yumcha at Asia Grand Restaurant with the BFF and F. Had scheduled this a month ago, and we wondered whether to cancel. Then the stricter 'circuit breaker' measures were announced a day before our date. We checked in with one another for the respective comfort levels of going out, and sharing a meal. Nowadays, there are severe consequences to going out. We went ahead with the date.
Blinked a little at the expectedly full restaurant, and the crazy queue outside to go to Amway upstairs. At least this wasn't a queue at IKEA/Harvey Norman/Toys R Us/Popular. Tables here are spaced far away, and our small table of four could easily sit a metre away from one another. We still needn't raise our voices to talk and have saliva fly across the plates. Communal spoons, chopsticks and plates are provided, of course. This is our favorite dim sum restaurant and it's closing for the month. Minimally. They're not bothering with takeouts or delivery. They should be able to roar back strong when restrictions lift.
I desperately needed a dose of the kitchen's freshly steamed cheong fun and their weekend special of pig's stomach soup. I can probably cook it at home, but I don't want to wash the pig's stomach. Good gawwd. That is the toughest thing to do. Most importantly, we get to eat a lovely bowl of preserved meats rice (lapcheong and yuncheong). Considering none of us are getting any decent rolls of preserved sausages from Hong Kong anytime soon, we can't even cook up a pot ourselves at home. So this precious bowl would have to do for now.
Asia Grand's unpretentious dim sum menu and traditional comfort food hit a spot with us. Although we wish the restaurant would remove shark's fin from its menu soon. It's about time lah. Regardless, it was a very good lunch spent in great company who's family. It would be a long time before we would yumcha together again. Conversation was fun, and we would have loved to carry on over coffee, but it was time to go home. Sitting down for lunch together was already such a treat.
