The Aged Beef Platter :: O'maJ's Take on Korean Lettuce Wraps

We didn't visit the man's parents for two weeks. It was a conscious decision. His parents are immunocompromised seniors with rather delicate constitutions; we don't want to put them at risk of any exposure from us. If we cannot be certain of our movements and such, we would rather stay away. Once we cleared our self-declared 14 days of not seeing them (and we'll do this 14-day thing again whenever), and ensured we felt 100%, we took them out to O'maJ to celebrate the man's birthday. #SupportLocal

The kitchen is being superbly creative. They're experimenting with ramen, and there's a secret one for now. Dunno its name, but it still has a tonkotsu soup base, and it's pretty much a cholesterol bomb, heavy and rich. Thankfully four of us shared a bowl. That made it super manageable. This bowl of ramen is made up of Mexican chillies, beef marrow and tendons. Instant noodles? Yes and no. This was a bowl of damn good noodles. The noodles used tonight were somen — it worked! Topped with plenty of spring onions and deep-fried beancurd skin, it was full of umami. It was delicious.

There were many other dishes of grilled grouper, caesar's salad and the restaurant's version of spaghetti bolognese. I only picked at these dishes because I was saving my stomach for the beef later on. The parentals' tastebuds are conservative, and these fairly predictable dishes guaranteed that they wouldn't go home hungry. Hurhurhur. We ordered more food items than usual to cater to different tastebuds, but that's okay. Whenever we do that, it keeps the kitchen busy and we can contribute to the night's takings.

The winner to night was definitely the 'Aged Beef Platter'. It held thin fillets of beef marinated and aged in coffee stout and sake kombu and bakwa. The dish is priced at S$261 per kg, and each platter holds a serving size of approximately 450 grams. The prized item in this dish is the beef. The restaurant ages its beef beautifully, and if we couldn't finish a whole slab, this was a great way to taste their creations. I'm definitely coming back to eat this dish again and again.

I was most impressed that this platter came with lettuce leaves. So fun!  The beef was served alongside mushrooms, onions and kimchi. This was a fantastic take on the Korean lettuce wraps! I loved it. Equal parts meat and greens. I asked for more greens and ate so much of it. Washed them all down with a bottle of Twomey's 2018 Russian Valley pinot noir. Since the parentals don't drink and the man was driving and couldn't have more than a glass, the bottle was ALL MINE. Wheeeee. This was a rather heavy pinot noir, complex yet fruity. It went great with the food tonight, and that was all the dessert I needed.
