Many Advent calendars now hold no religious content. I don't need them to. I traditionally mark Advent and Christmas in a muted sort of way. Time is portioned out daily for solitude, reading of verses, psalms, and reflection. This Time continues throughout Advent, obviously. (However, bible journaling is something I don't do.)
It's almost fun this year to receive two fun Advent calendars from the friends. I love it when we're not overwhelmed with gifts but lovely ones pop in welcomed. The calendars came in the form of beer and coffee capsules. Heh! While both gifts are for us, it's really beer for the man, and coffee for me. In the boxes, there will be variety. The man gets IPAs, I get the lighter ales and pilsner and such, and we share the stouts. For coffee, the man isn't too into single origins. He loves those flavored coffees.
We decided to open up the first slots of the calendars on the Sunday after Thanksgiving instead of December 1st. Wheeeee. We were extremely disciplined in not opening all of it. We didn't even bother googling about the contents either. We're keeping it a tiny surprise for ourselves, and maybe wrangle over who gets which on whatever day. It's super enjoyable!
