When N texted that her mom cooked nasi ulam (Nyonya herb rice) and she saved us a portion, I was like... 🤩. OMG. We were just talking about nasi ulam the other day at dinner, and N's mom (who had no clue about our random conversation at all) randomly decided to cook it over the weekend for their family dinner, and even had enough for us! Wow.
N's texts came on a night when Colbar at Wessex Estate forgot about our dinner order again, and we were damn sian. Luckily we had drinks while waiting. After waiting for an hour, the staff stacked up the tables and chairs. People left. I asked for our money back. We too left. It was just the man and I. We could still get a takeout from somewhere else. So now, with N's texts, we happily chugged over to their home to collect food.
(Colbar has done this to me for eight out of ten visits. They have my order, but somehow the kitchen never processes it. The cashier always ends up giving me back the cash earlier paid upon ordering. I won't ever bother specially going there to eat again. Their food sucks anyway.)
N's mom's nasi ulam is the bomb! Those fish flakes were lovingly hand-shredded. She used ikan tenggiri. There was kerisik too. Nom nom nom. She made a spicy sambal belachan to go along with it too. That chilli was shiok. We had side dishes too. The fridge had kebab and dhal; they went beautifully with the nasi ulam. We couldn't be more grateful to our dear friends for feeding us tonight!
