Lunch at Aunty J's :: The Best of Kerala Food on My Plate

We've so missed Aunty J's food. It was such a privilege to sit down at her dining table for lunch. "Bring Choya," she said. We were so stoked. What an honor for Choya to come along too. The dog was good as gold all afternoon. Curiously trotted around to explore, then settled by our chairs at the table, didn't beg for food, accepted head rubs and sprawled out to snooze. Aunty J might have secretly wanted to keep her for a few days. Muahahahah.

The dog had the time of her life running around so much space. When the thunderstorm came, she trembled from the roar of the thunder. Then she gleefully went out in the rain and ran around the garden, round the back and came in by the front, thrice. GOODNESS. Had to grab her and towel her dry to prevent her from shaking water all over the house. And muddy paws.

There was so much food! OMG! Fish curry (apparently we shouldn't substitute Kashmiri chilli powder with a normal one), chicken curry, mutton roast, dhal, cabbage thoran, winged beans and long beans fry, chena fry (elephant yam) and the splendid fish cutlets. There was even an onion salad with loads of tomatoes, cucumbers and pomegranate seeds. Mmmm. The best of Kerala dishes on the lunch table. It was very hard to stop eating. The matta rice soaked up all curry and gravy. I ATE SO MUCH. I also shamelessly ate three fish cutlets.

I couldn't believe it when Aunty J said there was dessert. She trotted out cheesecake and jackfruit, oatmeal cookies and vadai! Wow wow wow. The man ate two helpings too. He loves his birthday month because of THIS meal. Hahahha. We plucked the chilli padi from her garden to go with the vadai. And we got to take home a bunch chillies. I think the poor chilli plants are botak now. Oops. It was such a delightful afternoon! It’s so so precious. Dog came home and KO-ed big time. We humans lapsed into a food coma. No dinner necessary. Heh.
